ALEKS MATHHere are a few practical suggestions for using ALEKS, whether as a supplement or your sole math curriculum.
1.Set up notebook or binder with your child which will be used only for ALEKS. Use colored tabs that are the same color as the ALEKS pie slices to divide the binder into sections. As students do a problem from the red slice, for instance, they can copy the problem into the red section of their binder and solve it. Students should copy over “explain” examples or math vocabulary as needed into their notebook. Also put in the binder extra worksheets and handy math resources that you find. 2. ALEKS says the students may use their binders on progress assessments, but that is totally up to you. You know whether your child would be benefited or hindered by that practice. Progress assessments are those that ALEKS sends out automatically after 20 topics are mastered and five hours of time are logged. We want to keep the goal—a solid understanding of math—in mind. 3. Train your children to show their work in their notebook or binder. This is true for both ALEKS and your other math curriculum. Organization and the ability to think through a process are important skills for everyday life. So is being able to write neatly enough to demonstrate how you did something. As a student moves into more complicated math, the ability to show his work becomes extremely important. Trying to do higher level math problems without writing them down step by step will only impede your child’s progress. Our ALEKS LEG representative recommends you train them early on to show their work! It will save headaches later! |
