Look What the Children did during the PALS Test in Hayward, Lacrosse, & Cameron:
What Readers Do:
Writing should be meaningful and part of a child's everyday world.
To the right is an example of 2nd graders who I guided with ideas, strategies, spelling, and deeper thinking to come up with a list of what they do as readers. Notice it is in their language and they did the writing. When a spelling mistake was made, we put white paper over it and fixed it. I did not spell it for them, but helped them work through the sounds they hear and rules of spelling. Here is what they came up with! |
High Frequency Word Spelling and Word Study
High frequency word lists are an important piece to the PALS assessment. Here are some suggestions on how to work with your child on words they will see a lot with in text:
1. Pick the high frequency list that corroclates with your childs grade or abiliy level. Dolch or Fry are good choices, there are others.
2. Administer a high frequency list spelling test by giving them bout 10 words to spell at a time until they get through all 100.
3. Have them make a poster of the "Words I Know". These will be the words they spelled correctly and can say.
4, The rest of the words will be used for their spelling. Each week have them pick 5-10 words they can say and to procatice. On the fifth day they are tested on the words. If they get them correct, your child puts them on their poster. If not, they go back on the spelling list for next week.
5. Read the "Getting Started" document below for more information.
6. This is a great activity for ALL grade levels or any student who needs a little extra help with spelling and working with words!

Pyramid Words:1.Have the list of the 5-10 words your child picked for the week to practice.
2. They will write the first letter of a word first. 3. Next they skip down and rewrite the first and second letters of that word. 4. Then they skip down again and rewrite the first, second, and third letter of the word. 5. Continue until the word is complete, |
Mix-And-Fix:1. Have the list of the 5-10 words your child picked for the week to practice.
2. They write the letters large on white paper. 3. One word at a time, they should cut up the word. After cutting, they should mix the letters up and fix it 3 times. 4. On the third time, they glue it to paper. 5. Repeat steps above for the rest of the words until complete. |
